Photographing Places: The 3 Shot Rule

I recently learnt a new photography lesson from James Popsys. He’s one of my favourite photographers, and I love watching his videos to pick up new techniques and ideas. His videos have heavily influenced the way I approach travel photography He calls it the 3 Shot Rule. I’d heard of something similar in travel photography before: taking three types of images: a wide, landscape shot, something tighter with more detail, and a close, highly detailed shot.

I’ve been trying to put this into practice on my travels. Creating a range of images, rather than just ‘postcard shots’, helps convey the essence of a place to the viewer. This is my take on the 3 Shot Rule.
